The History of
The Finger Lakes Trading Cooperative

Rural Opportunities, Inc. through
their Rural Opportunities Enterprise Center, Inc. (ROECI) established
the Finger Lakes Trading Cooperative to offer new and expanding entrepreneurs
access to new markets, business training and loan capital. Senator
Hillary Rodham Clinton views this program as a way to assist rural
area businesses and entrepreneurs that heretofore have had difficulty
in accessing new markets for their products, proper business training
and access to capital for the purchase of equipment, inventory, real
estate and working capital.
ROECI began a search for partners for a program for the nine county
Finger Lakes Region. Livingston and Wyoming counties partnered with
ROECI in undertaking this effort to enhance their already successful
two-county Micro-enterprise Assistance Program (MAP).
In the short time since that decision their staff has worked with
ROECI to put together a network of service providers to support the
Finger Lakes Trading Cooperative. The Eastman Kodak Company has donated
20 digital cameras and a $20,000 grant towards the purchase of new
computers in support of the program and E-Bay has hosted training
sessions highlighted by their popular E-Bay University class to teach
participants how to market and sell their products on the internet.
In addition, HSBC, SUNY Geneseo, the Small Business Development Center
at Geneseo, the Livingston County Chamber of Commerce and Wyoming
County Chamber of Commerce have committed to assist with this program.
